FINANCE AUTHOR GIVES FIVE BUDGET BUSTERS TO AVOID

Many people are caught up in an endless cycle of spending their way deeper into debt in order to maintain a lavish lifestyle. They don’t have a budget for their spending, don’t want a budget and think they don’t need a budget. However, coming up with a budget and sticking to it doesn’t have to be a frustrating task for savvy families who know what budget busters to avoid, says Francine L. Huff, a financial journalist and author of The 25-Day Money Makeover for Women. The following list gives five budget busters to avoid in order to improve finances:

  1. Wasting utilities. Turn out the lights, cut back the heat and fix leaky faucets. Wasteful use of utilities can be a drain on household finances. Just turning down the thermostat 8 degrees for eight hours a day will save 8% to 10% on home heating costs.
  2. Eating out several times a week. The average American eats out three or four times a week, according to food industry experts, and the costs of those meals can really add up. Cook nutritious meals at home and help your wallet as well as your waistline.
  3. Not shopping from a list. Whether you are shopping for groceries, clothing or household goods, make a list before you leave home and stick to it. Include a total for the maximum amount you're willing to spend on your shopping trip.
  4. Buying the latest electronic gadgets. While it may be nice to have the newest MP3 player or plasma screen TV, is it really worth the price just to say you’re the first on your block to have the latest cool gadget?
  5. Not adjusting your tax withholding. Is Uncle Sam keeping too much of your hard-earned pay? For many people adjusting how much their employer withholds in taxes can free up some extra income for household expenses rather than having it earn interest for the government.

Journalist and author Francine L. Huff is available to discuss more budget busters and other personal finance topics. She is a news editor at the Wall Street Journal and writes the More for Your Money column for HomeLife magazine. Francine has appeared on a variety of radio and TV shows and is available if you’re looking for a financial expert to quote.

NEW MAKEOVER PROMISES MORE THAN BEAUTY ALONE
A Wall Street Journal Editor Offers Practical Financial Advice Just For Women

(Grand Rapids, Mich., February 2004) – A makeover can make most women look and feel pretty. The salon visit is expensive, but being pampered can make even the most stressed-out woman feel like a princess for a day. Now, a Wall Street Journal editor introduces a new kind of makeover—one that will not only make women feel good, but will prepare the way for a beautiful financial future.

The 25-Day Financial Makeover by Francine L. Huff (Revell) is a practical guide to help women get serious about their financial situation in less than one month. With more financial independence and control over money than ever before, women can find themselves stumbling into debt and other financial difficulties.

Huff admits that at one time shopping gave her an outlet for feelings of isolation and loneliness. Other women may be practicing bad financial habits passed down from their parents. In any case, all women can benefit from confronting the issues that hold them back from better managing their money and by implementing some realistic, godly steps toward that goal. Gaining control of one’s finances is also important, says Huff, because “instead of working to serve God and find fulfillment in his kingdom, many people become slaves to earning their next dollar just to stay ahead.”

The 25-Day Financial Makeover avoids difficult financial jargon while providing useful advice on paying down debt, saving money for retirement, cutting expenses, shopping smarter, and more. This 25-day plan, implemented in less than one month’s time, is a quick and practical way to rejuvenate a woman’s finances like a good makeover can revitalize her look.

“I made a conscious choice to change poor financial habits and to implement a workable system of managing money instead of letting money manage me,” says Huff. Now all women can have the opportunity to do the same.

"Written by a woman who knows effective financial management to women who need to know how they can better manage their own finances in a way that honors God. This highly readable and wonderfully helpful book delivers what it promises."
